SKATEPARK OF TAMPA
Brian Schaefer is famous for taking one of the most righteous slams in skateboarding history. That can happen when you build a loop and decide you’re going to try it at any price. While that one moment is by far the most dramatic of Schaefer’s exploits, it offers a fitting analogy for how he approaches everything he does. Going for it, all in, slam or land. In 1993, at the age of 21 he opened a skatepark so he and his friends would have a place to put up a vert ramp. With skateboarding barely clinging to life at the time, this would not appear to have been a wise business move. But over the years, through relentless hard work, he built the park into a touchstone within skateboarding. Skatepark of Tampa today is famous for hosting Tampa Am and Pro, the most respected contests of all time, and producing many of what could be considered skateboarding’s all time greatest moments (and worst when you factor in that loop attempt). There’s more to come, because Schaefer doesn’t stop, and he won’t unless he’s lying on the ground unconscious.
